Sustainable Homes

With climate change and rising energy costs, reducing energy is an urgent priority.

Since most Australian homes are energy inefficient - either too cold or too hot and quite expensive to run - the City of Kwinana would like to encourage owners and potential buyers to consider sustainable design principles when considering a new home or upgrading an existing one.

Sustainable design principles

Building a home using good design principles can reduce your energy consumption, water-use and energy bills. It also offers a comfortable living environment.

These design principles include:

  • site selection;
  • orientation;
  • room layout;
  • windows and ventilation;
  • insulation;
  • sealing;
  • colour and exteriors;
  • glazing;
  • shading and landscaping; and
  • appliances.

Water efficiency

Water is in critically short supply in areas of Western Australia. Simple measures like fitting water efficient showerheads can help to reduce household water consumption. Rainwater tanks can serve as a supplementary water supply and water conservation techniques can be used to reduce outdoor water-use.

Please refer to the WA Department of Health’s advice on the safe use of rainwater tanks on your property.
