Building Act 2011 and Building Regulations 2012
The Building Act 2011 and Building Regulations 2012 changed the building approval process in Western Australia. These laws set rules for how to apply for building permits and control the standards for building and demolition work. The City of Kwinana enforces these standards.

Building Act
The City of Kwinana adheres to the National Construction Code (NCC) Building Code of Australia (BCA) for all building construction requirements. It is a national code created by the Australian Building Codes Board (ABCB).
The BCA is part of the National Construction Code (NCC) and includes technical rules for building design and construction. There may be extra standards for new buildings or different rules for existing ones.
For more details about building classifications is available on the ABCB website.
Residential Design Codes of WA
The Residential Design Codes (R-Codes) set the rules for designing most residential buildings in Western Australia. The R-Codes help guide new design trends, promote sustainability, and make the rules clearer for better results.
They are also used to assess plans for dividing residential land.
