The City of Kwinana is partnering with RAC, through its Reconnect WA initiative, to engage place-making expert David Engwicht from Creative Communities International for a 7 Day Makeover of Wellard.

RAC’s Reconnect WA initiative provides local governments across Western Australia with funding to deliver community-based projects which change the look and feel of streets and public spaces.

Mayor Carol Adams said Wellard residents asked to engage Creative Communities to teach a whole new way of creating great public spaces with instant results on a shoe-strong budget.

“We’ve already held an information night, youth information session and business breakfast and look forward to the ideas generation day on Saturday, 15 April,” Mayor Adams said.

“Project planning will commence Sunday, 16 April ahead of the actual makeover week from 17 April to 21 April where everyone can roll up their sleeves and help transform The Strand.

“People of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate, even if they can only give one hour,” Mayor Adams said.

“City Officers will be involved throughout the makeover to help facilitate, manage risk, and ensure successful outcomes and we are thrilled to be a part of a people-powered transformation of The Strand.

“A launch party to celebrate the community’s achievements will take place on 22 April.”

David Engwicht said he was constantly surprised by what communities could achieve in just seven days.

“The secret to the success of the 7 Day Makeover is that it’s driven by the public and works on an impossibly short timeline with a very limited budget,” Mr Engwicht said.

RAC General Manager External Relations Will Golsby said RAC is proud to partner with the City of Kwinana through its Reconnect WA initiative.

“RAC is pleased to partner with the City of Kwinana to help revitalise Wellard, creating more opportunities for members of the community to connect with each other,” Mr Golsby said.

“By trialling new and innovative ways to use our streets and public spaces, we hope to lay the foundations for longer-term changes that support RAC’s vision for safer, more sustainable and better connected communities.”
