Weed Control

Weed Control

Weed control helps preserve our natural environment and maintain the beauty of our local areas. Find out about the City's weed control program, including the methods, schedule, safety measures, and options for opting out of spraying.

Weed Management Schedule

The City follows a schedule for managing weeds across various areas:

  • Regular maintenance: Weeds on kerbs, footpaths, and hardstand median islands are managed six times a year

  • Seasonal spraying: From the start of November.

Weed control methods

The City prioritises the safe and minimal use of herbicides in its weed management practices. Various methods are employed:

  • Glyphosate: This is the primary herbicide for road surfaces, kerbs, footpaths and traffic islands

  • Roundup Bioactive 360: This herbicide is specially used in aquatic areas and wetlands.

Important note: All these chemicals have been approved by the Federal Government's Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA). You can find out more about Glyphosate on the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (PVMA) website.

Safety Measures

The City ensures safety in herbicide application through the following practices:

  • Safe usage: Adherence to guidelines for application, storage and transport minimises risk
  • Application method: Low-pressure spray units reduce over-spray and unintended exposure
  • Chemical use notification: The City uses signage, beacons, and markers to inform the public
  • Protective measures: Staff wear protective clothing and spray only under favourable conditions
  • Caution around people: No spraying near people for added safety
  • Advance notice: The City advertises spraying schedules and offers a 'do not spray' register.

Do not spray register

If you prefer to exclude your property from herbicide treatment, please contact the City on 9439 0200 or at customer@kwinana.wa.gov.au to be added to the do not spray register. Please note, a condition of being on the register is that you maintain the weeds on footpaths, kerbs and verge adjacent to your property. In the case that weeds are not managed, spraying may resume.
