Aussie Rules Football greats Glen Jakovich and Dana Hooker visited Kwinana to participate in the City's Sports Person of the Year awards ceremony held at the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre on Friday 9 August.
Mayor Carol Adams said that the awards were an acknowledgement of those who had made significant contributions to the local sporting community in the last twelve months.
"We received numerous nominations for community members who have succeeded in a range of sports – from a local level all the way up to national representation," said Mayor Adams.
This year the Junior Sportsperson was awarded to Jermaine Pickett, an accomplished young footballer, for his contribution as both a star player and a role model to local youth.
Club Person of the Year was shared between Michelle Macdonald of the Kwinana Junior Knights and Mathew Gorman from the Saints Basketball Club.
"These awards are a way to recognise all the hard work and dedication that our sporting community displays, and mostly on a volunteer basis," said Mayor Adams.
"Our clubs are a vital part of the Kwinana community and we will continue to support them through infrastructure improvements, grants and funding," she said.
During the last financial year, 41 athletes in Kwinana received funding from the City to compete in a wide range of sports. The City also issued nearly 600 KidSport vouchers, amounting to more than $80,000 in funding to get kids into sport and retain them in Kwinana.
