The City won two WasteSorted Awards for initiatives supporting the State’s transition to a circular economy.

The Waste Team Award was presented on Thursday, 10 September, for the City’s AWARE Bin Compliance program which combines waste education, behavioural insights and innovative technology to help residents sort waste correctly and reduce contamination.

Mayor Peter Feasey said this program was delivering a smarter approach to waste education and behaviour change.

“Another innovation recognised by WasteSorted was the ‘In the Zone Circular Fashion and Pop-up Op Shop’ program which won the Community Events and Engagement Award,” Mayor Feasey said.

“Based out of the Zone Youth Space, this collaborative initiative between the City’s youth and waste teams encourages young people to reuse clothing, repair and upcycle clothing through activities that ultimately reduce textile waste while building skills like sewing and personal confidence.

“The City has a clear commitment to sustainability and circularity and it is welcoming to receive State recognition for these innovative waste initiatives,” he said.
