The City is Celebrating Biodiversity as Kwinana moves through Djilba into Kambarang, announcing a second wildflower walk, popular Gladdy Grab event, and installing a FireWise demonstration garden in Wellard for community education.
Throughout spring, a program of events and activities will help people discover and conserve local biodiversity.
Mayor Peter Feasey said in this season, wildflowers begin to bloom, birds nest and raise their young and insects and reptiles become more active.
“The Annual Wildflower Walk in Orelia is once again a highlight of the season, with a second Wildflower Walk location added in Apsley Estate in Mandogalup this year,” Mayor Feasey said.
“I encourage people to register for one of the walks or get along to one of the many opportunities to discover the native flora and fauna that thrive right here in our backyard.
“The annual Gladdy Grab to rid Wildflower Reserve of the invasive pink gladiolus, while filling vases at home, will be held 11 October.
“And to responsibly foster biodiversity within our own properties, the City has launched a demonstration garden filled with firewise plants that are low-fuel, low-maintenance and wasterwise.
“The FireWise Demonstration Landscape beside the Casuarina Wellard Community Hall will soon include educational signage and demonstrates how thoughtful garden design can help reduce bushfire risk while creating an attractive, waterwise and wildlife-friendly space,” he said.
Discover this permanent outdoor learning area this season, jointly funded by the City of Kwinana and The Forever Project through funding from the National Emergency Management Agency’s Disaster Ready Fund.
