Wildflowers and their pollinators are the theme for Biodiversity Month in Kwinana, with the City hosting activities including self-guided and guided wildflower walk.

People are invited to enjoy a walk through Sandringham Park, Orelia, to explore the beauty of our native wildflowers and share insights about the pollinators that help wildflowers thrive, including bees, butterflies and birds.

Places are limited for the guided walk with local experts on 21 September, so get in quick for the remaining tickets to this free event.

A self-guided audio tour of the wildflower walk is also available, using your phone and the trail markers’ QR codes. Use these to identify wildflower species and learn how these plants support healthy ecosystems.

Mayor Peter Feasey said the free activities were part of the City of Kwinana’s Biodiversity Month celebrations, with a focus this year on wildflowers and their pollinators.

“Wildflowers support healthy soils, reduce erosion, and provide crucial habitat and food for pollinators such as bees, butterflies, birds and beetles while in turn these pollinators help flowering plants reproduce so our ecosystems and food systems continue to flourish,” Mayor Feasey said.

“In addition to the walk, we’ve got the popular Grab a Gladdy Day on 14 September where the community can help remove weeds, and there is a Books and Biscuits event on Monday, 8 September with naturalist Eric McCrum also known as ‘The Birdman’,” he said.

A watercolour art workshop will wrap up Biodiversity Month at Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre on 29 September.

Colouring sheets are also available from the Kwinana Public Library, City Administration and any Biodiversity Month event, or download the native bee colouring sheet at home and bring it to one of the events.

The self-guided tour is available at Wildflower Walk | IZI Travel.
