A new community facility, known as Djilba Pavilion is currently under construction in Wellard, with the opening anticipated for June 2026.

The facility, to be build on McWhirter Oval on McWhirter Promenade, will include a Community Hall with a kitchen, a club room with a kiosk, and changerooms to support local sporting and community activities.

Once operational, the facility will become home to new cricket and AFL clubs forming in the area.

Mayor Peter Feasey said the City would also explore opportunities for other community groups to hire and use the facilities closer to the Pavilion’s opening.

“After much discussion, the City of Kwinana is pleased to announce that the new community facility will be named Djilba Pavilion, following Council endorsement on 15 October,” Mayor Feasey said.

“Djilba is the Nyoongar season of conception, covering August and September, and reflects both the historical and natural significance of the Wellard area which historically had wetlands that supported dairy farming and wildflowers.

“Djilba Pavilion was supported by both the Boola Maara Aboriginal Consultative Committee and Council and honours the landscape’s seasonal transformation and its abundance of yellow and cream blooms, along with the renewed flow of water that characterises this time of year.

“We look forward now to a vibrant future for community sport in Wellard and gathering at the new facility later next year,” he said.
