From October 2023 to March 2025, the City of Kwinana partnered with Good Sammy Enterprises to reduce textiles going to landfill across nine suburbs

From October 2023 to March 2025, the City of Kwinana partnered with Good Sammy Enterprises to reduce textiles going to landfill across nine suburbs: Wandi, Wellard, Leda, Calista, Medina, Kwinana Town Centre, Parmelia, Bertram and Orelia.

The Results Are In!

  • 1,524 households participated (14 per cent participation rate)
  • 1,715 bags collected
  • 18,665kg of textiles diverted from landfill
  • 332,561kg of carbon emissions avoided

Breakdown of what was collected:

  • 72 per cent clothing
  • 6 per cent shoes
  • 2 per cent accessories
  • 5 per cent linen (towels, cushions)
  • 1 per cent toys
  • 4 per cent other (books, DVDs, uniforms, etc.)
  • 8 per cent rubbish (damaged or non-reusable items)

March 2025 bin audits showed that 4 per cent of recycling and waste bins still contained textiles — and that’s a problem.

Let’s get it right:

  • Reuse is better than disposal
  • Textiles do NOT belong in your recycling bin – they contaminate the recycling stream.
  • Good condition items should be donated, not thrown away.
  • Only non-reusable textiles (damaged or worn out beyond repair) should go in the general waste bin.

Give your pre-loved items are given a second life, consider donating to support social enterprises and reducing environmental harm.

Let’s keep textiles out of the bin and in circulation. Thank you for making a real impact!
