The City of Kwinana recently launched its first Arts and Culture Strategy as an arts roadmap for the next five years.
Wellard Square’s newest mural, featuring local yellow spoonbills by Amok Island, is beautiful example of how art elevates local spaces and celebrates the City’s unique identity, and was jointly funded by the City and Wellard Square.
Arts and culture in Kwinana takes many forms from public art, music and festivals to workshops and youth programs.
To help shape this Strategy, we consulted with local artists, community groups, young people, and cultural organisations.
Mayor Peter Feasey said the Strategy was designed to strengthen community engagement, showcase local talent, and celebrate the City’s unique identity.
Three central priorities emerged from the consultation.
“The Strategy’s first priority is to help people create. This means we support of the development of new artistic works that reflect the people and stories of Kwinana, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture,” Mayor Feasey said.
“The second is to enable people to be creative. We want to provide inclusive and accessible opportunities for people of all ages to take part in creative activities, whether it be a workshop, creative hub, youth mentorship program or community-led initiative.
“Thirdly, we encourage people to experience creativity. We will deliver and promote diverse cultural events and experiences that reflect the City’s identity and build a sense of pride, belonging and vibrancy. This involves expanding festival offerings, promoting multicultural stories, and enhancing the presence of arts and culture in everyday life.
“The Strategy recognises that a thriving cultural life is a shared effort between local government, artists, businesses, and community members,” he said.
Over the next five years, the City will work to implement the Strategy in stages, with a focus on connecting local creatives and community groups, communicating cultural opportunities more widely, and positioning Kwinana as a place known for its creativity and cultural strength.
This includes investing in infrastructure, building partnerships, and delivering initiatives that are inclusive, sustainable, and reflective of local identity.
“Kwinana’s new Arts and Culture Strategy is not just a document, it’s an invitation to every resident to be part of building a more vibrant, inclusive and creative city,” Mayor Feasey said.
“People can attend events, contribute ideas, or share their own creative work and get involved in shaping Kwinana’s cultural future,” he said.
