The endorsement of this motion reflects the City’s commitment to addressing the issue of family violence, which has been escalating both nationally and within our community. With waitlist times for support services increasing and local police reports indicate an increase in family violence incidents, highlighting the need for collective action.
Mayor Peter Feasey said the passing of this motion sent a powerful message that the City of Kwinana stands united against family violence and is dedicated to advocating for the necessary resources to support our community.
“By making a public statement, we are declaring that violence in any form is unacceptable in our community, and as a Council we are committed to working together with the state government, local services, and community members to address family violence,” Mayor Feasey said.
“The City is committing to advocating to State Government for additional funding to combat family violence by enhancing the capacity of local services to support victims and survivors, provide preventive education, and develop effective intervention strategies.
“Together, we can make Kwinana a safer and more supportive place for all,” he said.
Any additional funding would be used to compliment the actions the City has already undertaken including being a proactive participant in the Rockingham Kwinana Safe Family Alliance, which is dedicated to preventing domestic and family violence through initiatives such as White Ribbon Day and the 16 Days in WA Campaign.
The City has also joined forces with the City of Rockingham and other local governments to host 40 family and domestic violence workshops. This pilot project, delivered by Anglicare and funded by the State Government, aimed at building awareness and skills to combat family and domestic violence across our communities.
