The second stage of the Gilmore Avenue Shared Path is now open, linking Chisham Avenue to Wellard Road with a three-metre-wide shared path.
The project was jointly funded by the City of Kwinana and the State Government as part of the WA Bicycle Network Grants Program.
Mayor Peter Feasey said the shared path quickly became popular with school children riding or walking to Calista Primary School, and seniors from the nearby Bankia Park aged care facility and Callistemon Court Aged Persons Units using mobility vehicles or walking.
“The combination of the two stages of the Gilmore Avenue Shared Path now provides a wide, safe linkage from Thomas Road all the way through to Wellard Road.
“The City of Kwinana is thrilled our residents of Banksia Park and Callistemon Court now have a safe way to access Kwinana’s key shopping centre, and Calista Primary School recently held a Ride or Walk to School in Winter Day utilising the shared path,” Mayor Feasey said.
“Replacing short car trips with walking, riding or scooting improves health and well-being, saves money and reduces traffic congestion and pollution while being a fun way to spend time with family and friends.
“Well-designed walking and riding networks create vibrant, livable and connected communities and the Department of Transport’s Your Move website inspires local communities to walk, ride, scoot or skate to school more often,” he said.
The City is looking forward to further promoting and activating the new shared path during Bike Month in October.
In the meantime, residents can share their views of the second stage and ideas for future shared paths on the Love My Kwinana website at www.lovemykwinana.com/gilmore-ave-shared-path-2024
