Community invited to comment on tomorrows Kwinana
17 May 2023

The City of Kwinana is inviting the community to have its say on the City’s draft Local Planning Strategy, which will help to shape the City’s land use vision for the Future.

Open to comment from Monday, 22 May to Friday, 30 June 2023, the draft Local Planning Strategy was developed following an extensive consultation exercise, undertaken in 2019, to gain input from the community to help inform the Strategy’s development.

Mayor Carol Adams said that the City was again consulting with the community to ensure that the draft strategy accurately reflects the community’s initial input and vision for the future.

“The Local Planning Strategy is a long-term plan that guides land use and development within a Local Government area over a 10-15-year period and is carried through into more detailed local planning schemes, strategies, policies, structure planning and developments,” Mayor Adams said.

“The City of Kwinana’s draft Local Planning Strategy aims to combine a range of economic, social and environmental issues to ensure that the City is well positioned to accommodate the changes expected to occur in our community, into the future,” she said.

The draft Strategy is developed around a number of forecasts that have been undertaken through technical studies and includes a growing population, requirements for diverse types of housing, increasing infrastructure including sporting, retail and community facilities, industrial and business expansion and environmental protections.

The City’s new draft Local Planning Strategy specifically aims to ensure that:

  • there are local centres established to provide a local hub with convenient access to shops and services for the surrounding community;
  • housing density and diversity is accommodated around our neighbourhood centres and the City Centre;
  • support is provided for business areas, the new port and expanded industry, including secure freight routes; and
  • there is increased protection for the City’s environmental areas.
