NAIDOC Week events resume with a Marketplace mural

NAIDOC Week events resume with a Marketplace mural
25 August 2021

A mural representing waterways and unity is added to the list of rescheduled NAIDOC Week events for Kwinana.

A mural featuring the hands of local children will adorn the public access corridor between Big W and Woolworths at Kwinana Marketplace as part of the series of NAIDOC events planned for Kwinana.

Artists Ash and Kelly Collard will help children place their handprints on the artwork on Monday, 4 October between 10.30am and 11.30am.

The mural ties in with the NAIDOC 2021 theme of Heal Country, and the handprints will represent community unity as they adorn the artwork like the leaves of a tree.

Mayor Carol Adams encouraged parents across the community to bring their children to take part in the mural activity.

“Sadly, the NAIDOC Week events planned for July had to be rescheduled due to the last lockdown in Western Australia,” Mayor Adams said.

“But the addition of this mural now presents a beautiful opportunity to create a lasting show of unity right here in Kwinana.”

An Opening Event will officially launch the Kwinana NAIDOC events on Friday, 17 September at the Darius Wells Library and Resource Centre from 11am to 2pm.

The event will include a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, artwork, traditional dancing and food.
