The City of Kwinana is making it easier to start, operate and grow a business in Kwinana.
Staff will participate in workshops run by the Small Business Development Corporation (SBDC) aimed at simplifying the way small business planning and building approvals, trading permits, and other local government approvals are assessed and determined.
The SBDC has partnered with 21 local government authorities to help improve the application experience for small businesses owners.
The City of Kwinana was selected through a competitive expression of interest process to take part in the project in May.
Mayor Carol Adams said nearly 97 per cent of business in the City of Kwinana were small businesses, employing fewer than 20 people.
“There are 1972 small businesses within the City of Kwinana who will soon save more time and money when dealing with this local government,” Mayor Adams said.
“For small businesses like Bliss Momo’s in Wellard, this is also valuable way we can make their experience easier as the pandemic continues to impact small business operations.
“A focus area for City of Kwinana is service delivery, with the aim to foster and drive a culture of a can-do attitude and openness in the delivery of service to our community and stakeholders with a focus on providing exceptional customer service.”
Eight teams from the City will participate in the workshops which are scheduled to start May 15 including staff from a range of department such as events, building services, and statutory planning.
Small Business Commissioner David Eaton congratulated the City on its selection to participate in the Small Business Friendly Approvals Program.
“The City has already demonstrated their strong commitment to supporting their local small business sector,” Mr Eaton said.
“Since joining the SBDC’s Small Business Friendly Local Governments initiative in 2017, they have progressed a range of commitments including reviewing their Local Commercial Support Grants to make them more user friendly; supporting a range of small business events in collaboration with the local Chamber of Commerce; and responding to the needs of small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic with an online register of open businesses and a shop local campaign.”
