Falls prevention workshop a success

Kwinana locals were recently treated to two free workshops focusing on falls prevention strategies to help older adults stay on their feet.

The workshops were a collaborative initiative between the City of Kwinana and South Metropolitan Health Service (SMHS) with a grant from Injury Matters as part of the Stay On Your Feet® ‘Improve Your Health’ grants program

Attendees heard from a pharmacist, nutritionist and an exercise psychologist who discussed topics such as how to check and manage your medicines to prevent falls, healthy recipes for good nutrition and strength and balance training.

Over the course of the two workshops, 62 people attended.

“We’re delighted to see such a great turnout with people understanding the importance of preventative health strategies,” said City of Kwinana Mayor Carol Adams.

Richard Crane, SMHS Manager Health Promotion and Community Development, congratulated the City of Kwinana for this initiative.

“Accidental falls amongst older adults in Kwinana resulted in the highest number of hospitalisations due to injury in 2018,” he said.

The City hopes to hold further falls prevention workshops in the future to help reach even more of our community’s seniors.
