Sustainability Framework

This page outlines the City of Kwinana's Sustainability Framework, our guide to building a thriving and sustainable community.

A Commitment to Sustainability

The City of Kwinana is dedicated to creating a sustainable future for our community. Guided by the Strategic Community Plan, we are proud to align with the globally recognised United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

To turn this vision into action, we have developed the Kwinana Sustainability Framework, designed to embed sustainability principles across all aspects of our operations and strategic planning.

What is the Sustainability Framework?

The Kwinana Sustainability Framework ensures a balanced approach by addressing all four pillars of sustainability:

  • Social
  • Economic
  • Environmental
  • Governance

How the Framework was Developed

This framework was shaped with input from both our community and City of Kwinana staff. By engaging with stakeholders, we identified local priorities that reflect the unique needs of Kwinana.

Key Components of the Sustainability Framework

Sustainability Framework Kwinana Guiding Principles

1. Sustainability Guiding Principles

The framework includes a set of eight guiding principles that steer the City’s operations and decision-making. These principles ensure that every action we take supports sustainable outcomes.

Again, the eight Sustainability Guiding Principles focus on four key areas:

  1. Social - People and communities
  2. Economic - Jobs and money
  3. Environmental - Nature and the environment
  4. Governance - Leadership and decision-making

2. Priority Areas

To provide a focused approach, the framework identifies seven Priority Areas. These are targeted towards specific work areas, offering clear guidance to achieve desired outcomes. The Priority Areas are:

  1. Climate Action – Taking steps to reduce carbon emissions and prepare for the impacts of climate change.
  2. Environment and Biodiversity – Protecting natural spaces, animals, and plants, and improving our local environment.
  3. Liveability – Creating healthy, safe, and enjoyable places for people to live, work and play.
  4. Engagement and Social Inclusion – Ensuring everyone in our community feels included, heard, and supported.
  5. Waste and Resource Recovery – Reducing waste and reusing resources to help the environment.
  6. Responsible Investment and Procurement – Making smart choices about where money is spent and how services are bought, with sustainability in mind.
  7. Innovation – Finding new and better ways to improve services and sustainability.

Both components of the framework are described in detail in the Sustainability Framework document.

Why the Sustainability Framework Matters

By applying this framework, we aim to foster a community that thrives socially, economically, and environmentally, while maintaining robust governance practices. The Sustainability Framework positions the City of Kwinana as a leader in sustainable development within Western Australia.
