Kwinana Loop Trail

The Kwinana Loop Trail Upgrade will enhance one of the City’s most popular outdoor recreation assets. The project will progressively upgrade the existing 21-kilometre trail into a high-quality shared-use trail for walkers, runners and bike riders.

Project overview

The Kwinana Loop Trail Upgrade will improve and enhance one of the City’s most popular outdoor recreation assets.

The project will progressively upgrade the existing 21-kilometre trail loop into a high-quality shared-use trail suitable for walkers, runners and mountain bike riders.

The upgrades will improve trail surfaces, signage and connections, making it easier and safer for residents and visitors to explore Kwinana’s diverse landscapes and natural environment.

This project supports the City’s vision of becoming a City of Trails, creating new opportunities for outdoor recreation, tourism and connection with nature.

About the Loop Trail

The Kwinana Loop Trail circles the outer edge of the City and travels through a diverse landscape of bushland, wetlands and residential areas across the Swan Coastal Plain.

Along the trail, visitors can experience several important natural, cultural and heritage sites, including:

  • Sloan’s Cottage and Sloan’s Reserve
  • Wilki Karda / Chalk Hill
  • Wildflower Reserve
  • Leda Nature Reserve
  • The former World War II Radio Communications Base

These locations provide opportunities to share stories about Kwinana’s environment, heritage and cultural history through interpretive signage and visitor experiences along the trail.

The vision for the trail

The Kwinana Loop Trail Master Plan outlines a long-term vision to transform the trail into a high-quality outdoor recreation destination.

Once completed, the upgraded trail will:

  • Provide a continuous shared-use trail for walking, running and cycling
  • Offer easy mountain biking opportunities suitable for beginners and families
  • Improve accessibility and safety through consistent trail surfaces and signage
  • Showcase Kwinana’s natural landscapes and heritage stories

The project will encourage healthy lifestyles, support community wellbeing and attract visitors looking for nature-based recreation experiences.

What the upgrades include

The Loop Trail upgrades will be delivered in stages and may include:

  • Resurfacing sections of the trail to create a more consistent and durable surface
  • Improving connections adjacent to roads to improve user safety
  • Realignment of sections to improve sustainability, safety and to meet the Class 2 Walking classification standards
  • Improved trail signage and wayfinding
  • Interpretive signage highlighting local history, environment and culture
  • Trail audits and safety improvements
  • Activation and promotion of the trail network

When complete, the trail will meet a Class 2 walking trail and Easy/Green mountain bike standard, providing an accessible and enjoyable experience for a wide range of users.

Funding

The Loop Trail upgrades are being delivered through a staged investment approach.

In 2024, the project received $3.5 million in State Government funding through the Outdoor Adventure Tourism initiative. This funding supports the first stage of works including resurfacing, signage upgrades and planning activities.

The total project is estimated to cost over $11 million when fully delivered.

Community engagement

Community input has played an important role in shaping the future of the Loop Trail.

Consultation activities included:

  • A community drop-in session held at Sloan’s Cottage in September 2021
  • Public consultation on the draft Master Plan in May 2022
  • Ongoing engagement through the Love My Kwinana platform

Feedback from residents and trail users helped inform the Kwinana Loop Trail Master Plan, which was adopted by Council on 26 October 2022.

Community and key stakeholder engagement also occurred as part of the development of the Kwinana Trails Network Masterplan throughout December 2024 and January 2025.  This overarching strategic plan which sets the vision for all Trails within the City, was adopted by Council in August 2025.

Further engagement will take place as design and construction phases progress.
