Kwinana Bush Fire Service (BFS)

The Town of Kwinana administers two Bushfire Brigades established by Council under provisions in the Bushfires Act 1954. The Kwinana South and Mandogalup Volunteer Bushfire brigades are primarily responsible for attending to all fires in areas within the Town boundaries, east of the Kwinana Freeway and to support the Fire and Rescue Service with fires in their region of responsibility.

The Bushfire Brigades are responsible and actively assist the Town of Kwinana in fire preparedness, prevention and recovery in these areas of Kwinana, performing regular training on their equipment also to maintain skills. Brigade members work closely with the Town of Kwinana Emergency Services and Ranger services.

BFB volunteer fire-fighters are trained to operate equipment, vehicles and appliances used in fire suppression operations.

BFB volunteers are trained in:

  • Personal and team safety
  • Fire suppression methods
  • Vehicle driving on and off road
  • Communications
  • First aid
  • Leadership and emergency management procedures
As the Bushfire Brigades are responsible to the Town of Kwinana, they can also be called upon to assist the SES in emergency incidents as required. Kwinana Volunteer Bushfire Brigades are also often called to assist at fire incidents in adjoining local governments and beyond.


Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service
 
Administered by the Fire and Emergency Services Authority of WA (FESA), the Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service have been a long standing service within the Town, providing fire and rescue response to complement and support the Hope Valley Career Fire and Rescue station.

The Kwinana Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service also provide vital support to the Town’s Volunteer Bushfire Brigades to control fire and other emergency incidents within the Town. Further to this, the brigade is actively involved in prevention works within the Town of Kwinana.


Rockingham Kwinana State Emergency Service Unit (SES)

The Rockingham Kwinana State Emergency Services unit services the areas of Rockingham and Kwinana totalling approximately 382 square kilometres with a volunteer membership of over 80 people. The SES is responsible to FESA to respond to natural disasters such as severe storm, cyclone, flood, earthquake and tsunami events.

In addition the SES unit also provides support services to the WA Police Service by carrying out search and rescue operations when requested. Other emergency services such as fire brigades are also supported by the SES.

SES volunteer training includes:

  • Map reading and navigation
  • Land search techniques
  • Storm damage techniques
  • General rescue
  • Radio communications
  • Leadership
  • Management
  • Driving vehicles for emergencies
  • Road accident rescue
  • Single rope techniques (abseiling) and vertical rescue
  • Ground support for fire services
