Tobacco control
From 31 July 2006, the Tobacco Products Control Regulations 2006 prohibited smoking in all enclosed public places including those on licensed premises.
This means that in addition to venues which were required to be smoke free prior to 31 July 2006 (e.g. shopping centres, theatres, airports, cinemas, cafes and restaurants etc), venues such as pubs, sporting clubs, night clubs and licensed restaurants are now also required to be smoke free inside.
This legislation is about reducing the community's exposure to second hand smoke (SHS). Numerous scientific studies have demonstrated the exposure to SHS causes or promotes a number of illnesses and diseases, including lung cancer and heart disease.
If you believe smoking is occurring in an enclosed public place you can contact a Town of Kwinana Environmental Health Officer to investigate.

Wood smoke
Many Australians still enjoy the comfort and warmth of wood heaters but wood heaters are a major source of air pollution during winter. Particle emissions from wood heaters (as smoke) are often significant contributors to haze events. Wood heater owners have a responsibility to ensure their wood heater operates correctly and only burn dry, seasoned firewood.
Top tips for reducing smoke coming from your chimney:
- Keep wood piles undercover
- Only burn dry seasoned wood
- Make sure the wood is burning brightly
- Do not close the air intake control overnight
- Clean your chimney once a year
- Further tips and information are in the handouts below. If you are experiencing a problem with a neighbours wood heater you can approach them about the issue or contact the Town of Kwinana to lodge a formal complaint
