The new Building Act commenced on 2 April 2012.
Fees, charges, documentation and procedures have all been updated as a result. More information on these changes is available from the Department of Commerce website, or by contacting the City of Kwinana Building Department on 08 9439 0200 or email.
A Building Permit is required regardless of the type of work to be carried out, this includes:
- housing, commercial or industrial developments
- garages
- carports
- roofed and unroofed patios
- garden sheds; and
- spas/swimming pools
To obtain a building permit it is necessary to submit a copy of detailed plans and specifications together with a Standard Application Form. Forms are available from Administration front counter or can be downloaded below.
Energy Efficiency
New dwelling and extensions are required to comply with the Energy Efficiency Provisions contained in the National Construction Code of Australia (NCC).

Demolition Licence
A Demolition Permit is required prior to the commencement of demolition for all housing, commercial and industrial developments, garages and carports and other significant structures.
Sign Licence
A Building Permit is necessary prior to the erection of a sign other than some exempt signs as described in the Local Law.
To obtain a Building Permit it is necessary to submit to the City's Building Department a copy of sign construction, sign writing and the proposed location of the sign on the site together with a Standard Application Form.
