New scholarships are available to help students from the Town of Kwinana complete degree courses at Murdoch University, thanks to the generosity of a local firm.

Medina-based company Waste Stream Management has pledged a total of $180,000 over the next six years for the WSM Scholarships scheme.

A total of 12 scholarships will be awarded over the four years from 2012. Each recipient will be awarded $5000 for every year of a four-year undergraduate program at Murdoch University.

Mr Peter Jenkins, Chairman of Waste Stream Management said: “We know that the costs associated with university study can be a deterrent for many people.

“These scholarships are designed to support students who are in genuine need of financial help. They will help to relieve the financial pressure of university study and enable the recipients to concentrate on doing well in their chosen program.”

Dr Marian Kemp, Director of Student Life and Learning at Murdoch said: “We are thrilled that Waste Stream Management has made this generous donation. It will not only help individual students, but is an investment in the future of the Kwinana community.”

The scheme has been welcomed by the Town of Kwinana. Mayor Carol Adams said: “This is such an incredibly generous gesture from Mr Jenkins and Waste Stream Management. These scholarships will transform the lives of some of our local young people and on behalf of the entire community I offer our sincerest thanks.”

The money can be used to pay course fees or other education-related expenses such as books, accommodation or travel costs.

To be eligible for the scholarships, applicants must be intending to enrol or be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate degree at any one of Murdoch’s campuses, live within the Town of Kwinana, be in demonstrable financial and/or personal hardship, and be an Australian Citizen or Permanent Resident.

Applications for the 2012 scholarships are now being accepted. Visit the Murdoch University website for further information on how to apply.
