The Town of Kwinana will recognise traditional Nyoongar culture by holding a variety of exciting and free events at various locations throughout the community between 27 June and 9 July.
All members of the community are encouraged to attend and with an assortment of activities including Aboriginal art and performers, traditional bush tucker, children’s activities and multi-cultural sport there is something for all ages to enjoy.
Kicking off on Monday 27 June at 10am at Koorliny Arts Centre, the launch will begin with a traditional Smoking Ceremony, followed by a ceremonious Welcome to Country, entertaining Aboriginal performances, and the presentation of the inspiring Six Seasons Banners developed between Aboriginal artists and local schools to represent the Nyoongar six seasons.
Also included in the commemorative week’s festivities is the Ngobaat Biddi Link Project held at Kwinana Beach and featuring a range of fun activities for children including a bush tucker trail, educational Aboriginal stories and games, and the artistic creation of ephemeral art in the sand.
Further activities include a Garden & Art Workshop innovatively combining the art of gardening with creative expression, an exciting day of children’s activities that include traditional story telling with Theresa Walley and fun interaction with a native animal display, as well as a series of energetic multi-cultural sporting games such as netball,
beatball and football. The only paid event will be the Kwinana NAIDOC ball which will present locals with a fun opportunity to dress up and enjoy a dance. Tickets cost $30 each and are available via the Medina Aboriginal Cultural Centre or through the Town of Kwinana website.
Mayor Carol Adams will be honoring the importance of Aboriginal Elders within our community by extending a personal invitation to prominent seniors to attend a celebratory private luncheon.
