The Town of Kwinana is reminding residents to take advantage of the useful Home Energy Toolkits available at the Kwinana Library. The kit allows environmentally-minded locals the opportunity to improve the energy efficiency and thermal performance of their homes.

The educational kit contains a collection of helpful tools, including a device used for measuring instantaneous power use of appliances, an infrared thermometer for checking insulation uniformity and leaks around windows, outdoor and indoor thermometers to track temperature control and retention, a compass for identifying building orientation, a self-guided home energy assessment and a collection of informative reading materials.

The kit’s availability is a timely reminder to residents that energy expenditure can have a negative impact, not only on the environment, but also on household wallets. The Government of Western Australia’s Office of Energy suggests some simple methods to help reduce domestic consumption, such as switching appliances off at the wall when not
in use, the installation of ceiling insulation, the use of fans as an effective cooling alternative, a reduction in shower duration to no longer than four minutes, the replacement of incandescent globes with compact fluorescents in high use areas and the installation of a gas boosted solar water heater. More handy hints can be found on their
    website at http://www.energy.wa.gov.au.

The Kwinana Library is located at the Hub Shopping Centre and is open on weekdays, excluding Wednesday, between the hours of 9am and 7pm, and on Saturday morningsbetween 9am and 12 noon. For further information please contact Ashley Harding on 9236 4300.
