Household rubbish, commercial rubbish and limited types of industrial rubbish can be deposited in the 240 litre bins subject to compliance with Council Health Local Laws. Council encourages residents not to place green waste other than leaves and lawn clippings into the 240 litre garbage bins. A number of options are available to residents such as worm farms, compost bins and delivering it to the Landfill Disposal Site, Millar Road Baldivis.

Group Housing and multi housing developments including aged person housing and blocks of units, whether strata titled or not, waste bins (rubbish and recycling) are provided on a shared basis. They shall be stored in a prescribed bin enclosure constructed to comply with Council Health Local laws. The number of waste and recycle bins supplied will be determined by Council's Manager Environmental Health Services and be adequate to remove all waste and recycle matter from the premises.

Other methods of green waste disposal:

a) Henderson Landfill - off Rockingham Road, Cockburn. For further information on tip fees and other information call ph. 94113444 or click here.

b) Millar Road Landfill - off Millar Road, Rockingham. For tip fee information call 9528 0333 or click here.

c) Used as mulch around the garden;

d) Mixed with organic kitchen waste in home composting bins or worm farms.

In order to minimise the amount of green waste going to landfill, residents should make as much use as possible of the alternatives to protect the environment and to conserve scarce water resources.

Illegal Dumping and Littering

The illegal disposal of any litter or rubbish including sand, rubble, trees, concrete, other domestic, commercial and industrial waste etc., on land other than land that is set aside for the purpose of waste disposal and approved by the Department of Environment and Conservation (DEC), is illegal.

Illegal dumping and littering is a serious issue which costs the community considerable money and therefore will attract ‘on the spot fines' or legal action and may incur removal costs including disposal fees. Reporting litter offenders to Council with sound evidence is your social responsibility.

Household Hazardous Waste

Asbestos waste is a hazardous substance. It must be removed under Safe Working Practices from buildings and properties so as not to create particle fibres. Asbestos must be wet, wrapped, labelled with 50mm lettering and sealed before transportation to an approved landfill. Notify the gatekeeper on arrival that it is asbestos and unload the wrapped asbestos waste without breaking the sealed wrapping.

Residents can now safely dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) like chemicals, wood preservatives, paint stripper, drain cleaners, batteries, pesticides, bleach, kerosene etc. The Hazardous Household Waste disposal sites for the region are located at the Henderson Landfill Site and the Millar Road Landfill facility

Refrigerators must have the door/s removed and the refrigeration gas removed to prevent risk and injury to children and damage to the earth's ozone before disposal to comply with DEC requirements. Refer the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council's website (www.smrc.com.au) for more information or call 9256 9555.

Worm Farms and Composting

Council supports worm farms and composting for the disposal of household waste including green waste providing it does not cause fly breeding or odour nuisances.

Using these methods of disposal are beneficial to the environment. Use of these methods must not create health or nuisance problems such as flies, odour and vermin. Further information on these methods can be obtained from the Council on ph. 9439 0218 or any company supplying or supporting these disposal methods.

Burning of Waste

There are no types of garden waste or general domestic waste or commercial and industrial wastes which are approved or permitted to be burnt either on the ground, in incinerators, in pot belly stoves and heater appliances, kitchen stoves or in other situations which are likely to cause the creation of excessive or offensive emission of smoke. Smoke and the associated particulates are harmful to the health of people in the community and cause health related illnesses.

Recycle Service fortnightly (same day collection as 240 litre bin)

Council provides yellow top bins to use in recycling glass, aluminium cans, plastics and paper as specified in the recycling guide delivered to every house in June annually or available from Council including the SMRC website www.smrc.com.au. These are collected fortnightly on the same day as the mobile refuse bins. The Council urges the community to make recycling a way of life by referring to the A-Z of Resource Recovery Guide.
