The Town of Kwinana's population is a very young one and children and families make up a significant part of our community. Infact in 5 years time in 2013, it is predicted that over 37% of Kwinana's population will be less than 24 years of age. In 2021, it is predicted this will increase to almost 40% of Kwinana's population.
The Town works alongside and builds relationships with local community groups to provide a range of activities and services that reflect the diversity of children's interests, abilities and needs, and supports parental involvement in play, learning and care.
The Town's Community Development team are currently working on a Children, Family and Youth Plan that will help Kwinana become a Child Friendly Town.
Literacy
The Town of Kwinana, through its library services, actively supports childhood literacy. Research into early brain development shows that a child's ability to learn and to develop pre-literacy skills is greater if they are read to from birth.
The Better Beginnings Family Literacy Program is coordinated by the State Library of WA and delivered through public libraries to support parents as their child's first teacher.
A range of fun and exciting activities are also on offer for children. These include storytime sessions and numerous school holiday activities. A family reading area has also been set aside at the Library.
Free tutoring help is now available online to library members. School children can use the service at one of the City's libraries or at home.
