Noise

Noise can be considered as unwanted or unpleasant sound. Too much noise can cause annoyance and stress. It can disturb sleep and disrupt simple day-to-day activities, such as reading or watching TV.

The Environmental Protection Act 1986 and the Environmental Protection (Noise) Regulations 1997 are administered by local government Environmental Health Officers. It aims to protect people from unnecessary noise while letting them carry out their business and social activities.

There are a number of authorities that may be able to assist with a noise problem. Noise issues are investigated by both Council Environmental Health Officers and Police Officers. If you are not completely satisfied with the action of the police or Council, you can seek mediation or take the matter to Court yourself although we do recommend you attempt to solve the issue before a court is necessary.

Noise from major industries is handled by the Department of Environment and Conservation.

You can apply to the Town for a noise exemption for certain activities such as Events and construction out of hours.
