Kwinana Beach and Wells Park Feasibility Survey
The City of Kwinana has engaged a consultant, GHD, to undertake a Development Feasibility Study for Kwinana Beach/Wells Park. The project will determine the suitability of continued use of Kwinana Beach/Wells Park as a recreational precinct.
Stage 1 of the project identified several risks to safety that prevent further expansion of recreational uses in the area, in particular organised sports events and events that attract large crowds.
The key risk to safety relates to hazardous materials handled at the adjacent Kwinana Bulk Cargo Jetty. In the very unlikely event of a safety incident, toxic gases could be released and affect the recreation area. Ensuring the safety of park users in future may involve closing all public access to the park and beach during times that hazardous materials are being unloaded. This would enable continuation of low-level recreation in Kwinana Beach/Wells Park.
The objective of Stage 2 is to develop recommendations regarding the type of recreational activities that might be maintained at Kwinana Beach/Wells Park considering all the risks affecting the area, including safety and erosion.
The City recognises the importance of community involvement in planning for the future of Kwinana Beach/Wells Park and is gathering information on values and uses of the site and invites you to complete the community survey by 26 June.
It is important to gain insights from across the community, and the City welcomes feedback from those who do not visit the site frequently as well as from those who do. Survey results will inform the recommendations of Stage 2 of the Development Feasibility Study.
