Green Waste Disposal

Other methods of green waste disposal:
  • Henderson Landfill - off Rockingham Road, Cockburn - 94113444
  • Millar Road Landfill, Rockingham - 9528 0333
  • Used as mulch around the garden; or
  • Mixed with organic kitchen waste in home composting bins or worm farms.
In order to minimise the amount of green waste going to landfill, residents should make as much use as possible of the alternatives to protect the environment and to conserve scarce water resources.

Illegal Dumping and Littering

Illegal dumping and littering is a serious issue which costs the community considerable money and therefore will attract ‘on the spot fines' or legal action and may incur removal costs including disposal fees. Reporting litter offenders to Council with sound evidence is your social responsibility.

Household Hazardous Waste (HHW)

Refer to your 2012/13 Resource Recovery Calendar for hazardous materials.

HHW can de disposed of at several location in the south metro area, see map below for locations:

Disposal locations.

Asbestos waste is a hazardous substance. It must be removed under Safe Working Practices from buildings and properties so as not to create particle fibres. Asbestos must be wet, wrapped, labelled with 50mm lettering and sealed before transportation to an approved landfill. Notify the gatekeeper on arrival that it is asbestos and unload the wrapped asbestos waste without breaking the sealed wrapping.

Residents can now safely dispose of Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) like chemicals, wood preservatives, paint stripper, drain cleaners, batteries, pesticides, bleach, kerosene etc. The Hazardous Household Waste disposal sites for the region are located at the Henderson Landfill Site and the Millar Road Landfill facility

Refrigerators must have the door/s removed and the refrigeration gas removed to prevent risk and injury to children and damage to the earth's ozone before disposal to comply with DEC requirements. Refer the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC) website for more information or call 9256 9555.

Worm Farms and Composting

Council supports worm farms and composting for the disposal of household waste including green waste providing it does not cause fly breeding or odour nuisances.

Use of these methods must not create health or nuisance problems such as flies, odour and vermin. Further information on these methods can be obtained from the Council on 9439 0200 or any company supplying or supporting these disposal methods.

Burning of Waste

There are no types of garden waste or general domestic waste or commercial and industrial wastes which are approved or permitted to be burnt either on the ground, in incinerators, in pot belly stoves and heater appliances, kitchen stoves or in other situations which are likely to cause the creation of excessive or offensive emission of smoke.
